Moji User Manual
Welcome to Your Moji
Made by Nico Brooks
Firmware v1.0.0 · Revised July 2026
Moji is a pocket-sized companion with a personality of its own. This guide covers how it thinks, how you control it with just two buttons, and everything it can do.
How it "Thinks" and "Feels"
Moji has a digital personality that experiences a range of moods. Its mood isn't random — it grows out of how you treat it.
- Trust: grows when you interact gently and consistently.
- Affection: maintained with gentle interactions (Left button).
- Energy: drains slowly over time and is topped up with playful pokes (Right button).
- Longevity: reflects how well Moji has been cared for over the long run.
Moji checks in on these feelings regularly and shows how it feels through its face — the eyes and mouth shift between expressions, blink on their own, and glance toward you when you press a button. If left alone too long, it gets lonely; leave it longer and it naps.
The Controls
Everything uses the same two buttons. On the home screen they interact with Moji directly; inside menus they scroll and select.
On the home screen
- Left, short press — Moji glances left, toward the button you touched.
- Right, short press — Moji glances right.
- Left, double press — Moji shares a mood-appropriate message.
- Both buttons, press — Opens the main menu.
- Left, press and hold — Starts the shutdown countdown.
In menus
- Left / Right, short press — Move to the previous / next item.
- Hold Right — Enter the highlighted item.
- Both buttons, press — Go back.
The Main Menu
Press both buttons on the home screen to open the main menu. Scroll with the buttons and hold right to enter.
- Play — Connect, Pong, Reaction, Maze, Dice, and Coin Flip.
- Tools — Level, Flashlight, Timer, and Stopwatch.
- Device — Stats, Display, Sleep, About, and Factory Reset.
- Messages — read and show saved phrases.
- Settings — Management, Mood, and Tutorial.
Games
Open Play from the main menu. Each app is built around Moji's two buttons and motion sensing.
- Pong: pair two Moji devices and play a synced paddle game.
- Reaction Test: Moji cues you at a random moment — press Left or Right as fast as you can. Your best time feeds back into its mood.
- Tilt Maze: guide a small cube through a generated maze using the IMU.
- Dice: roll with motion or a button press.
- Coin Flip: flip a coin on screen.
Tools
- Level: IMU-based level tool.
- Flashlight: hold the OLED bright as a small utility light.
- Timer: simple countdown timer.
- Stopwatch: start, stop, and reset elapsed time.
Messages & Affirmations
Moji ships with built-in phrases and can store custom messages from the management portal.
The portal can switch between built-in messages, Magic 8-style answers, or a custom message list.
Management Portal
Open Settings, then Management. Moji starts its own Wi-Fi network and serves a local page for setup, settings, messages, status, and OTA firmware updates.
- Join the displayed Moji Wi-Fi network.
- Use password
mojiconfig. - Open
http://moji.local/orhttp://192.168.4.1/.
Connect
Connect is the radio-active play entry point for paired Moji devices. The current firmware uses it for two-device play, including Pong.
Settings
- Management: open Moji's local web portal.
- Mood: adjust the current expression state.
- Tutorial: replay the setup guide.
Power & Battery
- Battery meter: a small glyph in the corner of the screen shows the charge level.
- Sleep timing: choose how long Moji waits before sleeping.
- Charging: a charging animation appears while the battery level rises.
- Low battery: radio-heavy features are blocked so Moji does not brown out mid-session.
- Critical battery (about 5%): Moji saves everything and puts itself to sleep on purpose, rather than shutting off abruptly.
- Everything saves automatically — personality, settings, and custom messages — even if the battery runs out.
